In recent weeks, GoDaddy discounted new dot tv (.tv) registrations. Today, I stumbled upon a GoDaddy press release titled, “GoDaddy Makes It Easy To Help Users Leverage Web Video & Other Rich Media Content.” It states that “registering a dot tv domain” is “the best way to integrate video into your site, whether you are just getting started or you already have an established presence in need of an easy online renovation.” I wonder how many people actually read this and believe it. The dot tv extension is attractive and an excellent tool to feature videos but it is no more difficult to add a video to a website on any other extension.
Clearly, GoDaddy would love if if people registered dot tv domains with their company, but what they would love is for people to register and renew their names with GoDaddy.
Generally, GoDaddy will advertise an attractive registration price for dot tv and then maintain a high renewal price. This attracts domainers and non-domainers alike because the discounted registration price is usually the lowest in the industry. GoDaddy rarely offers a dot tv renewal price that is competitive with other registrars. However, the non-domainers are unaware of this and under the belief that GoDaddy is the cheapest. They, not the regular domainers, are the group that get sucked into paying GoDaddy’s steap renewals.
Everybody I know will take advantage of the cheap registration prices at GoDaddy and transfer them to another registrar before the 1st year of registration is up. Or they will register multiple years at the intial discounted rate and wait until the initial registration years come up for expiration before they transfer them elsewhere.

GoDaddy’s commerical invites you to visit their website to see the GoDaddy Ad with Danica exposing herself (deemed to hot for TV). You go to godaddy, click the banner, and a huge advertisement for dot tv sits just below the header sitting on one HUGE piece of real estate.
Just remember…

Godaddy slashed registration prices to $22.99 per year for all years registered at the time of initial registration. This is a great price that is not likely to last very long. Jump on it!

You drop .tv pricing by over 75% and the number of registrations increase. No surprise, right?
Some interesting information from the Go Daddy press release that is found after the jump:
-65% increase in .tv registrations on 2006
-100 million people starting to watch TV online
-5.3 billion monthly video streams will be delivered to US Internet users
-‘TV’ is one of the most recognized two-letter symbols in the world

Today, Go Daddy announced the availability of a tool called Quick Blogcast, which combines two of its existing products Quick Blog and Quick Podcast. According to GoDaddy, Quick Blogcast can be used to create multimedia sites at .tv domains and other websites.
Rather than bundling value-added services with the sale of domain names, like eNom does with its Channelme.tv service and .tv domain names, it seems like Go Daddy’s strategy may involve offering lower prices on domains and offering services like Quick Blogcast separately for those that want to take advantage of them.

As many of you know, AllThings.tv is the most frequently updated blog that covers the .tv extension exclusively (though I admit I have been busy managing my personal .tv portfolio and developments and have had less time recently).
One of the more exciting aspects of the work is conducting interviews with some players in the domain and Internet video industries (all of which are on the AllThings.tv website as blogcasts and there are even some video interviews). Soon I will be able to add none other than GoDaddy’s founder, Bob Parsons, to the growing list of AllThings.tv interviews. Bob Parsons is a man many associate with domain registrations, especially after the GoDaddy series of Super Bowl ads run in past years…

Has Bob Parsons lost his mind?
Is Bob stealing the thunder from Richard Rosenblatt? Who will go down in history for the success of .tv?
If Bob continues his assault on .tv pricing, .tv could become the number one extension! Okay, that was a joke, but how low can he go?

Is Bob seeking to associate GoDaddy with the .tv extension?
Bob initially slashed the price of .tv domain names to $19.99 per year, a price seen only once before when eNom sought to increase the number of .tv registrations (eNom’s parent company is Demand Media, which is responsible for the marketing of the .tv extension and Channelme.tv). As I reported yesterday…

Currently, GoDaddy is advertising .tv pricing at $14.99 per year. If you EVER thought about registering some .tv names or renewing other non premium names, now is the time. It would be difficult to believe that this will be available for the long term.
Indeed, I said renewals too! Drop me an email, IM, or PM if you have more than just a couple of .tv names that you want to renew and I will get you in touch with a GoDaddy representative who can streamline the process of obtaining this once-in-a-lifetime discount. I noticed that the reason some people have not taken advantage of this discounted renewal pricing is that they do not want to move away from the tools offered by eNom. One solution is to renew as many years as you can through GoDaddy and then return to eNom by paying for one year renewal there.
This should probably be reserved for those domains not already on the Channelme.tv network since nobody knows what happens when you leave eNom and return. There is a chance you lose all of your posts, videos, forums, etc. That would be bad if you invested a significant amount of time on developed your channel.

GoDaddy dropped its sale price by $5 to $19.99 for new .tv registrations recently. The low price only applies to new registrations, not renewals. Obviously, the price does not apply to names considered premium names by Verisign; such names can only be sold by eNom. If you were going to jump into the .tv game or register new .tv names, now is the time. Prices have never been better than this.
