This week The Nielsen Company announced Nielsen Wireless, which will measure how many mobile phone users access content services such as mobile Internet and mobile video and what impact this has on established media behavior. Nielsen already tracks ringtone sales and conducts attitudinal and behavioral studies and mobile polling.
For those that support mobile phones and who would like to see more websites with dedicated sections for mobile phone users, this is something to celebrate. When Nielsen gets involved, companies pay attention because the value of any medium is directly proportional to how well it is measured. Independent measurement of the growing mobile audience such as this will support and accelerate the evolution of mobile media business models. Because companies make decisions based on numbers, Nielsen’s measurements will provide the necessary data to determine whether mobile phone specific sites could deliver a positive impact to their bottom lines.

Whilst I am always going to have a strong affiliation to the .tv extension, it is not the only domain that I am invested in. I have some .com traffic domains aswell as some .mobi names.
My feelings on the .mobi land rush back in 2006 is that I gambled and gambled wrong. To me this was an extension that made little sense given that a .com could work just aswell for a small mobile screen as it could for the laptop and desktop, so why would anyone want to tap in a four letter extension on a tiny keyboard when three would do and when com was and is still king.
And so I registered just one domain, GHETTO.mobi. And to be honest, even that was more of a “just to say I was there” reg than anything else.

People continue to ask me whether they should expand their domain portfolio to include .mobi domains. My answer is maybe, but only if you acquire good general keywords.
However, they were most likely taken in the first few rounds of the .mobi acquisitions since they were somewhat affordable as compared to .tv keyword names, which are priced as premium names.
