Boston.TV starts off my review of the developed .tv geo landscape.  Let’s first see how Boston.tv rate themselves:

Boston.TV is Boston’s premiere online video entertainment network seeking to both inform and entertain through unique and compelling video content. Boston.TV has a finger on the pulse of the city; it is your eyes and ears into the city’s hottest parties, newest restaurants, and most exciting sporting, theatre and art events. If something is happening in the city, our cameras will be there.

Unfortunately, I disagree with most of the above.

That is correct.  If you have not heard of blip.tv until today, then you will probably hear about it more often going forward.  Blip.tv provides a “great service for great shows.” The team at Blip.tv gets it!  They know how the Internet is ushering in a new revolution as individuals and small groups pick up the video camera and produce videos for the web.  They see the Internet as it is: The New World of Entertainment.  Blip.tv removes many of the obstacles that the average amateur faces in delivering his or her own video across the web.  Blip.tv provides the servers, the software, the workflow, the advertising, and the distribution.

Read OnThat is quite the recipe for success if they can continue to lure the talented individuals and groups producing video content for the web to publish on their site, which should not be difficult considering the exposure and rev-share Blip offers: Blip shares revenue with content creators on a 50/50 basis!

While Blip.tv was founded just over two years ago, it recently announced that it closed its first deal with venture capital investors, some of which include the four founding engineers of Skype.  Go BLIP.tv!!!!!  It is always nice to learn about the success of our .tv brethren.

Ccube rolled out a new click-to-call feature on social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook to allow members to instantly connect with the click of a button without ever having to reveal their personal contact information.  I imagine this is an example of the second round of technologies to come out of the new wave of Web 2.0 technologies that will focus on connecting and bridging the gaps between social networking sites and networks.

Previously, members within those communities and networks were limited to sharing phones, videos, and written text so this technology empowers users to transition from virtual to real-time interactions.  This is likely to become a trend because humans crave real interaction.  It would be no surprise if this technology succeeded given the popularity of VoIP and the calls that can be made using instant messenging system.

When buying up the generic city .tv in the geo name space, one has to remember that there is one monetization model, the PPC revenue model, that works wonders for .com geos, but will do nothing for .tv names.

For the next five years at least, I do not believe that there will be anything like the type of type in traffic that the .coms enjoy and thus simply having a parked page with lists of local companies offering services is not a meaningful business plan - at least not if you want to fully exploit the geo tv landscape.

What the geo .tv needs to offer is something more than a parked page and the options are many. But the bottom line is these sites need to be fully developed - no half hearted attempts, but full on development.

Well folks, there is no denying it, the .TV geo space is hot. In particular, the US city space. And has been hot for some time.

Every city in the US with a population larger than a gaggle of geese has been snapped up. And I am not just talking about the city.tv such as Newark.tv.

Combinations have also been bought up - such as PortlandMaine.tv. The Mys are gone too, such as MySanjose.tv. So too are the tv.tv such as NewYorkTv.Tv. Then you have all sorts of add ons such as ChicagoGuide.TV. The list is endless.

Of course there is the always the exception to the rule. Dallas.tv is still available to anyone willing to pay the $30,000 a year premium. Other than that - the top 100 cities in the USA are all gone and quite possibly the top 1000 cities too.

The question is why. Why is the geo such an attractive option for the .tv speculator and developer.

Discussing Apple’s plans with Walt Mossberg during the AllthingsD conference on May 30th, Steve describes Apple Tv as a hobby because “so many people have tried and failed to make that a business”

I think these words will come back to haunt Steve Jobs. Apple is not in the business of hobbies, it is in the business of making money out of other people’s hobbies.

Take the Ipod. Music is a huge hobby for most people. The Ipod allows people to enjoy their hobby in ways that were not possible before. But the Ipod itself is no hobby. It is a ten billion dollar business.

So Apple TV needs to be a business to be in business.

Why is BrightCove considered by so many to be the Number 1 video platform? Jeremy Allaire discusses his company and product lines in fine detail and also lays out his vision for the future of online video advertising aswell as his vision for the internet in general.

Ladies & Gentlemen,

It is not often that you have a technology conference with such a line up of superstars and icons of the industry. I will attempt to place each video on Allthings as they become available for your viewing experiance.

I know this much. I will be attending next year’s conference if my health permits. Me and Kevin had no idea of this blog AllthingsD.Com when we chose our name for Allthings .TV. We are glad though that if we have a similar name, it should be so similar to such as prestigious organisation.
