After this weekend’s 1st Annual Global.tv Internet Expo, I made the decision to open the blog up to posts from trusted and established people who are just as interested in the dot tv extension (watch for future posts).  In addition, I will be relaunching the AllThings.tv Forum to play a greater role in the site and to provide a place for people to share ideas, discuss development, and network with other dot tv enthusiasts.

I will be packing my bags tomorrow and leaving for the 1st Annual Global.TV Expo, which is an event that will be talked about for years to come. 

On the weekend of September 19th, those with a serious interest in the dot tv extension will descend on Cincinnati, Ohio to not only discuss dot tv, but also to get our hands around the issue of how the Iternet landscape continues to shape and influence society and commerce.  I spoke to Niko, one of the event organizers, and this event will cater to entrepreneurs, developers, and those fascinated by new media.  I expect to see everyone from those with a significant investment in the dot tv extension to those that have secured a few premium names, which are being held for speculation or development.

http://www.tv received a makeover and the site is now promoting a contest for participants to submit .tv Webmercial that ‘[s]how[s] everyone that .tv is the home for rich and dynamic content on the Web.’ Nine winners will receive a Flip Mino camcorder.  The grand-prize winner will be awarded the new Sony HDR-TG1 digital camcorder.  The new site also provides visitors with an opportunity to get their own address, explains the benefits of the .tv extension, and hosts a gallery of developed .tv websites…

In recent weeks, GoDaddy discounted new dot tv (.tv) registrations.  Today, I stumbled upon a GoDaddy press release titled, “GoDaddy Makes It Easy To Help Users Leverage Web Video & Other Rich Media Content.” It states that “registering a dot tv domain” is “the best way to integrate video into your site, whether you are just getting started or you already have an established presence in need of an easy online renovation.” I wonder how many people actually read this and believe it.  The dot tv extension is attractive and an excellent tool to feature videos but it is no more difficult to add a video to a website on any other extension. 

Clearly, GoDaddy would love if if people registered dot tv domains with their company, but what they would love is for people to register and renew their names with GoDaddy. 

Generally, GoDaddy will advertise an attractive registration price for dot tv and then maintain a high renewal price.  This attracts domainers and non-domainers alike because the discounted registration price is usually the lowest in the industry.  GoDaddy rarely offers a dot tv renewal price that is competitive with other registrars.  However, the non-domainers are unaware of this and under the belief that GoDaddy is the cheapest.  They, not the regular domainers, are the group that get sucked into paying GoDaddy’s steap renewals.

Everybody I know will take advantage of the cheap registration prices at GoDaddy and transfer them to another registrar before the 1st year of registration is up.  Or they will register multiple years at the intial discounted rate and wait until the initial registration years come up for expiration before they transfer them elsewhere.

Demand Media, the company responsible for marketing the premium side of the dot tv domain name extension, recently raised another $35M in Series D Funding.  However, its unclear where it intends to invest this money as its dot tv business is only one of many.

2007 ended with a total base of just over 58 million ccTLD domain name registrations.  The ccTLDs as a whole experienced six percent growth quarter over quarter and 33 percent growth year over year. The largest ccTLDs saw moderate growth or slowing in the fourth quarter. For example, only eight of the top 20 largest ccTLDs increased the size of their base at a rate faster than then they did in the third quarter. Of those, the growth rate of only two grew at rates greater than one percentage point; .cn’s growth rate grew at just over six percentage points and .fr grew at just over one percentage point over the previous quarter…

Almost a year ago, I entered negotiations with a dot tv (.tv) owner related to the purchase of his/her domain name.  The seller wanted a $xx,xxx price.  It wasn’t worth that and after asking the seller to justify the price and discussing the merits of his arguments, he finally lowered his price to $x,xxx…

The geo (short for geography or geographical) domain space is becoming red hot, particular in the dot tv extension since the extension lends itself particularly well to the kind of coverage one might show on a geographically oriented site.  For example, Vanuatu dot TV…
