A recent statement made by VeriSign VP Raynor Dahlquist that:

“Throughout the world, the phrase ‘TV’ means world-class entertainment, which explains why major broadcast networks, sports leagues, gaming sites and training organizations have adopted the .tv extension for their business. This trend shows every sign of continued growth.”

was backed up by another finding released by VeriSign, that “.tv had 100 percent year-over-year growth in registrations”, absolutely annihilating all other extensions as far as year over year growth is concerned.

Those of us that monitor the extension with any degree of interest would not be at all surprised – either by the fact that .tv has beat out all other extensions in year over year growth, or by that huge factor of 100%.

Here are my thoughts as to why .tv has had this huge surge over the last year.

Can you think of any other extension out there that describes the content features contained within that website??

None is the answer. Not even .mobi.

.Mobi says that the content contained within has been synthesized for mobile phone use. That is where the programming of XHTML comes into play. But it still does not say whether the content contained therein is interactive or not. It could be an online directory or it could be a tv on demand website.

.Org tells you that the information contained therein is non profit in nature, but does not tell you whether the content is interactive or merely informational, participatory or not.

Only .tv tells you that the content contained therein has, at the very least, some sort of media element to it, be it online video, streaming tv and could also contain user generated content, social networking, uploaded video etc.

Now, not all .tv sites will have the above qualifications. In fact I am guessing that the vast majority of .tv sites right now are parked pages.

This fact, in and of itself does not take away from the brand, as long as the direction of developed .tv sites grows rather than slows, heads north rather than south…..and that a vast majority of these developed .tv sites DO contain the above qualifications….then the brand stays true and imparts its message to internet participants…

Thus, coming back to why there has been this recent surge in .tv domain registrations. The answer is simple. Never before, in the history of the internet, has the question of do you/don’t you become so important.

“Do you, Mr. Website, contain interactive media on your site, or don’t you?. Are you new school or old hat?!

In the age that we live in today - the age of the insatiable appetite for information at lightning speed, having a .tv site fulfills that request by informing you immediately that coming to this site will offer you interactive content……

Welcome to Web 2.0. Welcome to .tv!!
