Rational domain investors and web developers can agree that .com is and will remain king for the foreseeable future since it was the first domain extension to both gain widespread adoption and receive millions of ad dollars in promotional advertising in the form of print and broadcast ads.

We also know that whatever site that can be built on a .tv domain name can be built on ANY domain name in ANY domain extension.  So why all the hype surrounding dot tv?

If you missed the .com boat because you were too young, you were ignorant of the market opportunity, or you were not the domain investor you are today, then you probably have your eyes open to ANY opportunities that still exist in the domain name game.

Many believe that one such potential opportunity exists with the dot tv extension, which continues to receive attention from amateur and professional domain investors and developers.  Dot tv lends itself well to video and interactive sites, but more importantly the letters ‘t’ and ‘v’ when combined together represent the most powerful brand and most recognized abbreviation in the world.  When the dot tv extension catches on (and it is slowly moving in that direction), it will be big.

More people in the world know what tv represents as compared to .com, but is that enough for the dot tv extension to truly rise up and become as powerful as say .net or .org?

I think it has the potential, but the real issue is whether the dot tv extension is substantially undervalued?

The opportunities with the generic keywords in the dot tv extension are endless if leveraged properly.  The generic keywords, and generic keyword combinations that lend themselves well to the .tv extension are probably undervalued but that is because they have not been developed to reach their true potential.  Unlike generic .com keywords, generic .tv keywords do not have the same level of traffic simply because significantly less people know about the extension so relying on parking income probably isn’t a winning proposition for most dot tv owners.

Domainers, including those with significant .com holdings, realize that the key to extracting the value of most domain names is to begin developing them.  Unfortunately, because .com was first to market, dot tv must wait its turn.  It will require tens of thousands of dot tv sites promoting the extension indirectly through the marketing and advertising of those dot tv sites.  As more people use dot tv sites, dot tv traffic will grow and dot tv awareness will spread, increasing the value of the extension.

In light of all the free content available on the Internet, any person can develop a website and monetize it.  The key is leveraging that content and expanding the site to fit the needs of your audience in such a way that it is profitable on an exponential level.  The best thing about the Internet and domaining is that you can do this with any extension, not just .tv.
