While my partner basks in the sun of what VeriSign VP, Ryanor Dahlquist, spouted about .tv, Frank Schilling continues to do whatever he can in his blog to reinforce .com branding and take cheap shots at the one extension that has the power to attract investors away from the .com extension.
The title of the blog in question starts out, “What’s wrong with .biz domain names?”
Frank states, “You can register a .biz name and market the heck out of it, but 90% of the rest of the world is reinforcing the .com extension in branding, advertising and media. It is a dot com world and fighting against that global Internet standard (created by the world’s web site owners) is an exercise in futility. Buy anything but a .com (or the CCtld of your populous country) and make your life unnecessarily hard.”
I bet more of the world recognizes what tv stands for than what com stands for…
The TV acroynym has been around for decades longer than com. So while .com may forever be king in Frank’s mind, .tv is going to make a run at the castle...maybe not this year, but in the years to come…and .tv will become cemented in the heads of world wide web users everywhere.
Frank also writes, “.Biz’s problem isn’t unique to .Biz. Every new novelty TLD suffers the same fate.. You just can’t get enough people to switch because there is no good reason to do so. And so the rest of the world visits the .com while you try in vain to get the world to think differently. Del.icio.us tried it.. But they bought delicious.com after a while as a hedge.. Bud.tv tried it.. but they won’t be giving up their .com anytime soon.”
And therein lies the stab at .tv. Those aware of bud.tv’s history know that its lack of success has been hampered by the age verification process, poor strategy, and sloppy execution. But I guess its easier to take aim at a heavy hitter that has failed than recognize the power of the .tv extension. To ignore the incredible branding opportunity behind the .tv extension is short sited and misleading.
If you look through more of the blog entries, you will notice Frank’s .com leanings, but maybe we can persuade him to open his eyes to .tv one day.

A nice post Kevin.
What can I say - a generation ago, or maybe two generations ago depending on your age, if some one was asked what was the best car on the market the reply would have been Rolls Royce. Today the reply is likely to be Ferrari or some other exotic car. Perceptions change as technology advances.
Of course internet time is measured in years (or less) not generations and what was king may not always be.
The most recognisable two letters in the world are “tv” and it has been like that for 50 years or more. Over the last year there has been an explosion of User Generated Video Content that allows for a media enriched internet experience, and the two letters that describe that is the TLD .tv - you know what to expect.
Getting back to your castle analogy, there are a lot of ancient castles in Europe and they are respected and admired - however, they are just not the focal point of a society as they once were - perceptions change.
12 years ago who would have thought that the almighty giant named Microsoft could ever be dethroned? Even rivaled for that matter? Out came Google and the world changed again. Lesson learned. Nothing is forever and to blindly think so by Mr. Schilling is more economics than logic.
Wal-mart was only a small outfit in Arkansas in 1968. Now Wal-mart is the world’s largest company in the world in revenues. Change is one certainty in this life. Comsuners like new things, new stores, new creativity. Dot com will always be main street in the cyber world but even main street gets old.
Good morning James and ALL of you at AllThings.TV - Cate from https://www.ImGay.Tv
here! (my CTO is trying to teach me some type of “spider” technical stuff! - I hate bugs but I’m going to learn to LOVE “spiders”
I got to admit that I’m a litte tired right now but having a blast! - we are going crazy developing as we go along. I came up with a new “rule” on ImGay.Tv that after I interview you - you have to go find the next person to interview and DO IT! - I’m going to have to show others how to create user generated content! - We are growing! - We are becoming know as the gay beat on the street around all the PRIDE events. I had the privlege of videoing all of Susan Ashley Stanton address to this group as well as have an exclusive interview with her. A “tease” video will be posted on you tube with see full interview(S) at https://www.ImGay.Tv aka https://www.IG.Tv
From these interviews we have now become the official videographers for St. Pete Pride this June 30 2007 - over 75,000 people are expected at the event. We are now known as media! - Why? Our name of course - .TV !!!!! - Gotta love it - we are moving.....Best https://www.Cate.Tv
If someone shows Frank a model or if he comes up with 1 that is capable of outdoing his .com business I think he would jump in with gusto!
Until then he will protect what he knows and so would all of us if we were as successful as he is.
Still staying ahead of the game and knowing the market and noticing shifts is the key to investing in any sphere so perhaps he should pay a little more attention to what is happening to video quality on the net and also advertising trends overall.
Everyone seems to compare .tv to .com there is no need to compare, it will carve out its own path on the web, just go with it and work out how best to ride the wave!
Frank is right ..... I own many extensions , But when it comes down to it - I’ll only BRAND on .com
There is great risk but also great reward for leading. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that in 3-5 years the .tv domain name will be more valuable than the .com (macau.tv over macau.com, etc.)
Let’s think about domains like shares on the stock market. People like Frank say “dotcoms are bullish” and keep on buying them. Others say “dotcoms are overbought” and invest in novelties. The market always grows up and crashes at some point. Then money flow to a new product to grow from.
IMHO the big companies/organizations will get their unique TLDs in the future. I.e. they will not support coms in value. COM, NET, ORG will become a mark for economy-class deals..
Great foresight. .tv still has a long way to go over .com’s. But IMHO, the extensions doesn’t matter for a site. It is the content and the overall design/concept of the site that matters. It is absurd to imagine that a .tv or a .com can cost more than the other if both sites has exactly similar content and quality.
