Boston.TV starts off my review of the developed .tv geo landscape.  Let’s first see how Boston.tv rate themselves:

Boston.TV is Boston’s premiere online video entertainment network seeking to both inform and entertain through unique and compelling video content. Boston.TV has a finger on the pulse of the city; it is your eyes and ears into the city’s hottest parties, newest restaurants, and most exciting sporting, theatre and art events. If something is happening in the city, our cameras will be there.

Unfortunately, I disagree with most of the above.

To be fair to Boston.tv, they do state that they are in Beta phase, a term that is becoming ubiquitous with .tv sites.

But I see no originality to the site which is my main concern. The design looks a little untidy, the color scheme could be better and the content of the video leaves a lot to be desired.

Just because something is happening in Boston does not make it “compelling” viewing. I do not need to come from nor live in Boston to know what compelling content is.

Their catalogue of video footage is small and unoriginal; it would seem like they took a look at LX.tv and said that is a formula we should copy for Boston tv. It may work for them, it does not work for me.

As for interactive content, Boston.tv currently offers a My Channel which allows you to pull videos from those available under different title headings, such as A&E , and drag it to My Channel.

However, like I stressed already, there is nothing in this catalogue of videos that is really that interesting in the first place. It is also a small catalogue, so you are never going to end up with a channel of your own that will keep you entertained for hours on end.

What I will say in their favor is that the quality and professional editing of the video footage is pretty good and would certainly do any .tv geo site proud to have any videos in that league.

And they do say that they will be offering a pod cast in the near future, so that may help liven things up alittle bit.

As for monetization, Boston.tv does a lot better. They offer pre roll and post roll ads, evidence of which I had not seen in the videos I viewed. Boston.tv also offers banner ads on a CPM basis. I saw just the one ad.

They also offer tours and in their own words state:

Interested in buying a tour? Boston.TV video tours showcase restaurants, shops, clubs and small businesses around the city that give Boston its distinct character and allow viewers a visual preview of what to expect at these establishments. We will produce, shoot and edit a 30-60 second piece that could play on our website as well as syndicate to any site interested

There are around 15 tours on the site and are extremely well shot.

My rating overall for the site is 5 out of 10.
