Is Bob seeking to associate GoDaddy with the .tv extension?
Bob initially slashed the price of .tv domain names to $19.99 per year, a price seen only once before when eNom sought to increase the number of .tv registrations (eNom’s parent company is Demand Media, which is responsible for the marketing of the .tv extension and Channelme.tv). As I reported yesterday…
Bob then cut that price by 25%, dropping it another $5, to $14.99. Nobody anticipated this and few understand why.
Obviously, Bob intends on acquiring more .tv business than ever before. Perhaps Bob knows that he cannot compete with the Channelme.tv network rolled out by Demand Media and he believes he can make up the margin by selling other services like privacy, email, and hosting. Perhaps Bob also realizes that the .tv extension has a bright future given the significance and meaning of the two letters ‘T’ and ‘V’ when put together.
When I registered a domain name at GoDaddy in the past I was annoyed because .tv was far down the list on the drop down menu used to select the domain extension. As someone who recognized that .tv would become a popular extension, I strongly believed GoDaddy could be giving it more exposure by moving it up on the list of extensions, rather than placing it several (~10 or more below .com?).
Today, I noticed that the .tv extension is listed 2nd, immediately after .com! Its a major victory for the .tv extension when .tv follows .com on the drop menu of the world’s most recognized domain name registrar. Some might believe that such a move is insignificant, but it means a lot more to the .tv fans like me who have been closely following the rise in popularity of the .tv extension for years now. If anything, it is a sign that the .tv extension is moving that much closer to becoming one of the fastest growing extensions behind .com.
To me, it is also a sign that Bob Gets It.
Or at least he is starting to. I noticed that Bob has launched a GoDaddyTV account on YouTube.com but he has yet to create anything at GoDaddy.tv; that forwards to GoDaddy.com. Unfortunately, he doesn’t understand that if he used GoDaddy.tv to feature all of the videos on his YouTube account through embedding, he could benefit from the free advertising. Bob, call me and I can help run your GoDaddy.tv domain to attract more business than your Super Bowl ads!

Good to see the largest registrar is pushing .tv like never before. And having .tv just below .com as second in the search bar is quite surprising and ‘proof’ that .tv is hot and still getting hotter!
