Just three weeks ago I was enjoying the limelight for being part owner of DE.tv which sold for a record $21,500. Not anymore. Friday the 1st June Surface.tv sold for $27,000 to a buyer called “ Marksmen”.

There is a strong suspicion that the buyer is acting as a broker for Microsoft. The reason for this suspicion is the timing of the sale. Negotiations for the sale of Surface.tv had reached its final stages when Bill Gates revealed Microsoft’s latest computer, the Surface, at the AllthingsD conference.

Discussing Apple’s plans with Walt Mossberg during the AllthingsD conference on May 30th, Steve describes Apple Tv as a hobby because “so many people have tried and failed to make that a business”

I think these words will come back to haunt Steve Jobs. Apple is not in the business of hobbies, it is in the business of making money out of other people’s hobbies.

Take the Ipod. Music is a huge hobby for most people. The Ipod allows people to enjoy their hobby in ways that were not possible before. But the Ipod itself is no hobby. It is a ten billion dollar business.

So Apple TV needs to be a business to be in business.
