Normally, we cover stories that are about new or recently launched Web 2.0 sites, but I felt compelled to share the following story about how White supremacists and other hate groups are using Internet video-sharing sites to spread their message. “Inexpensiveness, ease of use and ability to reach a huge young audience are among the reasons the groups are turning to YouTube and Google Video, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.”
None of these video sites were intended to promote hate speech and its just as difficult to weed out all of the hate speech as it is to weed out all of the videos that infringe intellectual property rights. In fact, “YouTube threatens to bar users who employ ‘hate speech which contains slurs or the malicious use of stereotypes.’”
It is virtually impossible to police the thousands of videos uploaded each day, but what this shows is how 1) we can never fully anticipate how people will use such technologies for their own political gain and 2) these sites may need to staff their sites with people whose job it is to monitor and remove such content.
This is an issue worth watching…

Pete Cashman of Mashable.Com commented recently in a blog titled MYSPACE IS BETTER THAN PORN that the statistics firm Hitwise, indicated that social networks are about to overtake sex sites in the US any day now. The metric being measured is percentage share of site visits, with % visits to sites like MySpace, Bebo and Facebook on the increase, and % visits to porn sites going down.
How very interesting!! Hitwise being the same firm I quoted from in my blog WEB 2.0: A MINORITY SPORT ?? in which it claimed that only 0.16% of You Tube viewers upload video…and Flickr fares hardly any better with only 0.20% uploading any pictures
Now, without being too graphic,(and not sure I am succeeding) I would imagine that the percentage of porn viewers actively participating on their porn sites would probably be in the high 90%’s!!
Which goes to prove the old adage that there are lies, damn lies and then there are statistics….

In a highly revealing article in Business Week Online, author Bruce Nussbaum points out that according to a study by Bill Tancer, an analyst with Hitwise, most Web 2.0 visitors are a bunch of couch potatoes, with less than one percent of You Tube viewers (0.16%) actually uploading video to the site. And this is not just for Web 2.0 video sites. Flickr, the photo sharing site, only has two tenths of one percent of viewers actually uploading photos.
Rather depressing statistics for those who claim that Web 2.0 is THE revolution of the 21st century.

Web Strategist Jeremiah Owyang, currently employed as Director of Corporate Media Strategy at PodTech.net, innocently decided to embark on a blog listing all the social networking tools out there on the market today…
As Jeremiah found out, this was easier said than done. Starting out with 8 companies, the list grew and grew as commentators to the blog brought more players to the table. The list currently stands at 41 companies!!!! And 87 comments!!!
Here are the contents of that list ( http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2...ing-platforms/) but have also posted them here for your conveniance.
My comments on the blog ( COMMENT 86!!) you will find at the end of the article.

Here is just one small but telling indicator that we are not yet there.
I went out this evening to Barnes & Noble for coffee with friends. I wanted to buy a book on anything and everything to do with vlogging - which is the video version of a blog. Hunting around in the computer/internet section, I found nothing. And so, I went to the help desk and asked the young lady (early thirties I guess) if she had anything on vlogging in the store.
Once I had repeated myself and assured her that I was looking for a book on VLOGGING and not FLOGGING, she shook her head and said that the store had nothing on the topic.

This site was recently bought to my attention and I have to say that its impact on me was that great that I could do nothing but stare open mouthed at what was unfolding before my eyes.
Here is how they describe themselves :
